MODEL OVERVIEW

About this model: GE GFE26JYMFS

GFE26JYMFS has a two-minute Door Alarm and a tc display that identifies Turbo Cool, both documented on its GFE26J external panel.

GFE26J cabinet and exterior panel

GFE26JYMFS is a 25.70-cubic-foot, standard-depth GE French-door refrigerator, with 17.54 cubic feet allocated to fresh food and 8.17 to the freezer. The exact SKU is 35.75 inches wide, 69.875 high and 35.875 deep. Its exterior has electronic temperature controls, a digital readout, chilled-water and ice dispensing, an indicator for the XWFE water filter and a Door Alarm. Inside, GE lists two humidity-controlled drawers and a separate full-width drawer with adjustable temperature; the freezer has two baskets. The linked owner guide spans several bottom-freezer families rather than printing the full GFE26JYMFS suffix on every page. Pages ten and eleven, however, expressly label GFE26J next to the external Figure C controls, and the exact product page confirms the external panel features. Use that combination when reading a displayed message. The manual shows two versions of the Figure C filter button, so the article does not assume which filter-reset label is printed on a particular unit.

Door Alarm after two minutes

Door Alarm is the useful warning to check first after a long loading session. On the model-labeled external control, a short press of Alarm toggles the warning on or off. The guide says it sounds when either door remains open for more than two minutes and stops once the door is closed. If it beeps, check both upper fresh-food doors and the freezer drawer, not merely the side used most recently. A full-width pan that has not been pushed back onto its slides, an overfilled freezer basket or a tall container can interfere with a complete seal. Reseat such items and watch whether the sound ends after closure. If the refrigerator seems quiet while a door is open, confirm whether Alarm was toggled off before calling the electronics defective. The two-minute rule is a door-open timer; it is not a measured food-temperature threshold. Record which opening was ajar and how long it stayed that way if the warning recurs.

Why the display says tc

The same Alarm pad has a second, quite different action. Holding it for three seconds activates Turbo Cool, and the refrigerator display then shows tc. GE's exact listing includes Turbo Cool, and the linked troubleshooting table explicitly explains that tc means this function is active. The program speeds recovery of the fresh-food section after a large load, warm leftovers or a prolonged outage. During it, the fresh-food target cannot be adjusted; the freezer setting is unaffected. A brief Alarm press to change the warning and a three-second hold to start Turbo Cool therefore have different outcomes, despite using the same area of the panel. If tc appears, check whether someone held that key while managing the door chime. Let the cooling program finish or review the controls section before treating the letters as a failure. A flashing filter reminder, a silent locked control and tc should not be merged into a single diagnosis.

Water filter and a useful service record

Water and filter observations need the exact hardware context. GE specifies an XWFE filter for this SKU, located in the upper right corner, plus a filter indicator on the exterior panel. An unlit indicator can be normal; the manual says it changes when replacement becomes due. The two Figure C drawings have different filter-key labels, so follow the words actually printed on your unit for any reset instead of borrowing the neighboring drawing. If water dispensing is weak, note the flow separately from tc or Door Alarm and check whether a recent filter change preceded it. If the controls ignore a press, the Figure C Lock key may have been held for three seconds; it disables both dispensing and other keys. For a service request, give the full GFE26JYMFS number, exact letters or indicator shown, Alarm on/off state, whether a three-second hold occurred, which door was open, filter-light status and ordinary water-flow result. Those details map the observation to the applicable part of the manufacturer guide.
