MODEL OVERVIEW

About this model: GE GOS29NYYFS

GOS29NYYFS is a 28.5-cu-ft standard-depth GE side-by-side with an internal water pad, in-door cubed-ice maker and documented XWFE fault messages.

Match the GOS29N cabinet before using the manual

GOS29NYYFS is a 28.5-cubic-foot, standard-depth GE side-by-side finished in fingerprint-resistant stainless. GE allocates 18.24 cubic feet to fresh food and 10.24 to the freezer. This is the broad, full-depth GOS cabinet, measuring 35.75 inches wide and 36 inches deep overall; plan its space rather than using measurements for the shallower GZS side-by-side. The owner-manual cover names the GOS family, and its suggested-assembly drawing on page 33 expressly labels GOS29N as a 29-cubic-foot internal-dispenser model. That page is the best map for its door bins. The same PDF illustrates external-dispenser and non-dispenser refrigerators, so its generic drawings must be matched to the GOS29N label before following them.

Find water behind the fresh-food door

This model serves chilled water from a recess on the right interior wall of the refrigerator. GE calls the feature an internal, one-touch dispenser; there is no outside water paddle to use when the doors are shut. The page-seven feature illustration and page-fourteen instructions show a glass pressed against the recess and then the dispenser pad. GE asks the user to leave the glass underneath for two or three seconds after releasing the pad because a little water can still flow. Periodically wipe the recess to prevent deposits. Its control panel is also inside on the right wall, but the water pad and the temperature controls have different jobs. For a complaint about no water, identify whether the internal pad responds before interpreting any message on the display.

Use the in-door ice system and available storage

The factory-installed ice maker sits in the freezer door, not behind an external through-door ice chute. Its removable bucket can be carried away to fill a cooler, and the exact GOS29NYYFS specification lists cubed ice rather than crushed ice. GE says a newly installed unit may take twelve to twenty-four hours to start making cubes; the bucket may need two or three days to fill. The door arrangement leaves room for four freezer glass shelves and one cabinet drawer. On the fresh-food side, four glass shelves and two drawers support a different storage pattern, while flush-mounted LED bars and MultiVent cooling serve both compartments. Page 33 separates the GOS29N internal-dispenser bin positions from the external-dispenser layout; consult that row when rearranging door storage.

Read filter text on the inner control

The right-wall control shows temperature settings and XWFE water-filter messages. Replace Filter means roughly ten percent of filter life remains; Filter Expired means the cartridge has reached its water capacity or six months of use, whichever comes first. Err appears when a cartridge is absent or the wrong one is fitted, while Leak Detected reports water outside the filter. These are filter-system alerts, not fault codes for the sealed cooling circuit. GE specifies an XWFE cartridge for this exact model. Its access panel is low in the fresh-food compartment, below the drawers. Note the precise displayed words before replacing parts: an expiration notice calls for a planned cartridge change, whereas a leak calls for checking water around the housing at once.

Respond differently to a leak and an unrecognized cartridge

The troubleshooting table on page 34 makes the distinction practical. It associates Leak Detected with a leaking filter and warns that water and ice can be disabled. Replace the cartridge if it leaks, and wipe up any water at the housing after replacement. The same table links Err, often with Replace Filter, to a filter that is not detected or cannot communicate. Verify that the installed cartridge is XWFE rather than XWF, inspect the label for damage, and check that it is properly seated. The manual directs access through the lower refrigerator panel; the internal water recess is not a filter housing. After an approved replacement, observe whether the message clears. Continued visible moisture deserves attention even if cooling temperatures look normal.

Put door and temperature controls in context

GOS29NYYFS includes a door alarm, internal digital temperature display, Turbo Cool, Turbo Freeze and a control lock. The door alarm sounds when either compartment is left open; closing the door and clearing an obstruction at the gasket is a sensible first check. The manual recommends 37°F for fresh food and 0°F for the freezer as initial settings and allows time for stabilization. Turbo shortcuts are chosen operating modes rather than evidence of failure. GE lists Wi-Fi as optional for this SKU and names accessory PBX23W00Y1, so a connected notification cannot be assumed without that accessory. When a filter message and an open-door warning occur together, treat each on its own terms: check the door for the alarm, then inspect the XWFE system for the named filter text.
