MODEL OVERVIEW
About this model: GE GSD5500GBB
GE GSD5500GBB is a black 24-inch dishwasher whose six status lights include Sensing, Rinsing and Drying. The GSD5500 panel and linked manual give separate CleanSensor, Rinsing and Drying fault patterns.
Confirm the GSD5500 control layout
GSD5500GBB is the black, 24-inch built-in variant listed by GE. Its exact-model record specifies electronic operation, ten touchpads and six cycle-progress status lights. The linked manual covers several related GE series, but the drawing labelled GSD5500 has Light Wash and Heated Dry rather than the Speed Wash and Speed Dry keys shown on neighboring panels. That distinction matters before following a fault table: a reader should match the actual control labels, not merely the family cover or the color of a machine.
GE's product page also confirms Clean Sensor, self-cleaning triple filtration, a Piranha food disposer, two-, four- and eight-hour delayed starts, and Control Lock. These features identify what this exact sales model offers. The page names Light Wash as one selection and Heated Dry as a switchable option, consistent with the GSD5500 drawing. The status lamps are particularly useful because they report the phase of a cycle as well as certain faults. A fault description is meaningful only after the correct lamp and any accompanying beep are identified.
Understand the adaptive wash
The control-settings page explains that Sensing appears while CleanSensor assesses how dirty a load is and whether more prewash is needed. Washing, Rinsing and Drying indicate different phases. Sanitized is more demanding: it lights only when the cycle actually meets the required sanitization conditions. GE gives different Normal figures for heavy and light soil, reflecting the adaptive nature of this family. Thus a longer run by itself is not evidence of a control failure; soil and incoming temperature can change the result.
For this GSD5500 panel, Heated Dry is a selectable option, not the Speed Dry key in the adjacent EDW drawing. The manual adds 40 minutes when heated drying is used with China Crystal or Pots & Pans, and 24 minutes with Normal, Light Wash or Sani Wash. Start/Reset cancellation takes approximately 90 seconds while water drains. After a successful cycle the Clean lamp stays steadily lit until the door opens. A delayed start or locked panel also has its own expected behavior and should be checked before assigning a fault.
Read each status-light fault
The page-six diagnostic drawing separates four situations. If the Sensing lamp fails to appear during the expected first portion of a cycle, GE calls it CleanSensor Error and advises service; the machine can still wash without that sensor. By contrast, a Washing lamp flashing immediately after Start/Reset can simply show a deliberate drain-and-reset sequence. Allow up to 90 seconds before selecting another load. Neither situation should be reported as the same code as a beeping Rinsing or Drying fault, even though all involve the status display.
Rinsing flashing together with beeps is labelled Control Error. The manual first says to silence the beeper with Start/Reset, then turn power off at the circuit breaker for ten seconds and restore it; service is needed if Rinsing keeps flashing. Drying flashing with beeps is a separate Control Error row: Start/Reset lets the dishwasher attempt a reset, followed by a restarted wash and service if the error continues. Record the specific status word, whether it blinks, and whether the beeper is active before applying either sequence.
Check performance and water movement
For disappointing cleaning without a fault light, the same manual specifies incoming water between 120 and 150 degrees Fahrenheit. Rinse Only is for a partial load to be washed later and does not need detergent in the main cup. The lower-rack wash tower must remain clear because it sends water to the middle arm under the upper rack. A blocked tower can make upper-rack items come out poorly washed even when the control display operates normally; check placement before assuming a sensor or circuit problem.
If drainage is weak and the installation includes an air gap, GE's care page recommends inspecting and cleaning that plumbing fitting. It is not a built-in dishwasher part and may be absent. The exact listing's filtration and food disposer are also reasons to keep the wash path and loading arrangement in good order. Control Lock intentionally disables pad input, so test that setting separately from the flashing status patterns. Continued Rinsing or Drying warnings after the specified steps belong with a service technician.
