MODEL OVERVIEW
About this model: GE HVM1540SNSS
For HVM1540SNSS, REM is the scheduled Reminder indicator; the owner manual separately documents FOOD IS READY or END, six Reheat choices and OTR vent care.
Identify the HVM1540SNSS configuration
The HVM1540SNSS is GE's stainless-look Spacemaker unit for installation above a range, combining a 1.50-cubic-foot microwave with a cooktop exhaust. Its exact product entry states 950 watts of IEC-705 microwave output, a scrolling clock display, a 12.5-inch glass turntable and a 300-CFM, two-speed vent fan. The manufacturer links directly to a 40-page owner booklet whose cover includes the HVM1540 family. That booklet repeatedly warns that controls can differ among the four families on its cover. For this SKU, GE separately confirms a 24-hour Reminder, Cooking Complete Reminder, six-code Reheat, three vegetable categories, a Custom Pad and a removable rack. These exact-product confirmations are what make the corresponding family instructions useful here. A number printed for a food program identifies a menu choice; the visible REM indicator is a programmed status, not a failure code.
Distinguish REM from cooking completion
REM appears after someone uses the REMINDER control as a small alarm clock, even while microwave cooking is under way. Page 26 says to enter the desired reminder time and press REMINDER again; the indicator remains lit to show the appointment is stored. Pressing REMINDER later displays the chosen time, while REMINDER followed by zero clears it before the signal. The clock must show the correct time of day for that schedule to make sense. This is different from the cooking-complete reminder on page 24: after a heated item is finished, the display can say FOOD IS READY or END and beep once a minute until the door opens or CLEAR/OFF is pressed. A REM light can therefore persist when no heating is happening, whereas the finish message belongs to a completed cook cycle. Neither notice alone identifies a damaged sensor or power component.
Maintain the cooktop light and exhaust
The over-range location gives the controls two additional jobs beyond warming food. GE specifies bright, night and off settings for the cooktop lamp, allowing light on the burners without starting the cavity. The exhaust fan has two speeds and a 300-CFM rating; the exact listing describes external venting. The same manual explains that every version uses a reusable metal grease filter, while charcoal filtration applies only to recirculating installations. Its page 34 recommends cleaning the grease filter monthly or as needed, drying it before reinstalling it. The optional charcoal path should not be presented as a factory-installed filter on this externally vented SKU. Another troubleshooting row explains that the vent fan may remain on while the microwave runs to cool internal parts; that behavior alone is not a display fault. Treat a cooking ventilation question separately from the REM schedule on the display.
Choose food programs by the requested input
For everyday meals, Reheat takes one of six food types: pasta, meat, vegetables, beverages, sauces or a plate of leftovers. Those values choose a recipe and are not six error codes. The booklet says to cover most foods but leave a wide-mouth beverage mug uncovered. The exact SKU also confirms Vegetables for canned, frozen and fresh food; the manual asks for category one through three and weight in ounces. Popcorn uses packaged bags of three to three-and-a-half ounces. Auto Defrost is the weight-guided path for meat, poultry and fish; Time Defrost uses a selected interval for other frozen foods. Time Cook I and II permit sequential timed stages, and Delay Start schedules a cook after the clock has been set. Use the prompt belonging to the chosen program rather than entering a Reheat code where vegetable weight is requested.
Use the turntable, rack and display correctly
The HVM1540SNSS has a 12.5-inch glass turntable that GE says can be switched off, plus a removable wire rack with two positions. They serve different purposes: leave the turntable operating for normal even heating, and use the rack only for the multi-level reheating described on page 29. That page warns against storing the rack in the cavity, placing it on the microwave floor or using it for popcorn. Page 21 also excludes the shelf specifically during the automatic Reheat feature; the page-29 rack layout concerns separately timed reheating, so do not combine the rack with that preset or with popcorn. A clock display that is dark may simply have been hidden by holding zero for about three seconds, as page 25 explains. Check that setting, the REM indicator and a completion notice independently before treating an ordinary display state as a repair issue.
