MODEL OVERVIEW

About this model: GE JAS640RMSS

GE JAS640RMSS is a compact 24-inch glass-ceramic electric range whose HOT COOKTOP lamp warns of residual surface heat after a knob is off.

Confirm the compact glass-ceramic model

JAS640RMSS is GE's stainless 24-inch compact electric range, with a 2.9-cubic-foot single oven, front rotary controls and a full-width storage drawer. Its exact GE product page links the 56-page owner PDF whose cover names GE JAS640. The same cover also lists Hotpoint RAS models, so the shared booklet requires careful feature selection. GE identifies this exact SKU as a black glass-ceramic radiant smoothtop, not a removable-coil range. Its four cooking positions comprise two six-inch 1200-watt elements and two eight-inch 2000-watt elements. The cabinet opening is 24 inches; check installation dimensions rather than assuming that the outer chassis is exactly the opening width. The exact specifications list both an element ON lamp and separate hot-surface indicator lights. This physical control layout is the starting point for interpreting what a glowing light means.

Read HOT COOKTOP separately from ON

The most important signal is HOT COOKTOP on the glass surface. The model specifications confirm hot-surface lights, and page eight of its linked manual says the glass-cooktop indicator lights when the unit is hot to touch. It remains on even after that unit is turned off and continues until the area cools to around 150 degrees Fahrenheit. That behavior is intentional; turning the knob to OFF stops commanded heating but does not immediately remove stored heat from ceramic glass or cookware. Keep hands, towels, packaging and cleaner away while the warning remains lit. The separate surface ON light is about a selected unit: the manual says it glows when any surface control is on. A dark ON lamp therefore cannot be substituted for a cool-glass check. If HOT COOKTOP stays lit shortly after cooking, record how long the surface has been cooling rather than treating the lamp as an electronic fault number.

Understand radiant heat and cookware

Radiant units underneath the smooth glass cycle on and off to maintain the chosen knob setting. The manual also describes a temperature limiter for each zone that can temporarily interrupt heating when a pan boils dry, has an uneven bottom, sits off center or is absent. This explains why the visible glow may pause even though a knob remains selected. It does not by itself establish a broken element. Use flat, clean-bottomed cookware centered over the marked zone, and avoid sliding it across glass that resists scratches but is not scratchproof. The glass retains heat after switch-off, enough to keep food cooking; moving a finished pan away can prevent overcooking. These radiant-glass instructions apply to JAS640RMSS. The booklet's nearby Sensi-Temp coil and drip-pan paragraphs belong to different models on the shared cover and should not be used for this smoothtop.

Use the small oven and steam clean

Below the cooktop, the 2.9-cubic-foot oven provides Bake and Broil, two racks, four rack positions, a windowed pull-down door and an oven ON light. A mechanical temperature knob controls heating; its oven/cycle light goes on and off while the elements maintain temperature. That cycling is distinct from both surface lights. Set a rack before preheating, allow space around pans and choose a position appropriate to the food. For light interior soil, this particular SKU is listed as standard clean with a steam option. Page eighteen calls for starting with a room-temperature cavity, removing excess grease, pouring half a cup of water on the bottom, closing the door and setting the knob to 200 degrees Fahrenheit. After the timed heating and cooling periods described there, wipe softened soil and remaining water. It is a small-soil aid, not a high-temperature self-clean cycle, and a badly soiled cavity still needs manual care after cooling.

Care for glass and check heating symptoms

The black glass surface needs its own maintenance routine. The manual recommends ceramic-cooktop cream with paper towel or a non-scratch pad and says not to heat the surface before cleaner residue is removed. Let burned food cool before applying the approved pad; rough cookware bottoms, spilled sugar and dragging pans can damage the glass. Do not use the coil-model advice to pull an element from a receptacle or wash a drip pan, because JAS640RMSS has hidden radiant units beneath the glass. If heat seems weak, first identify whether ON is lit, whether HOT COOKTOP reports residual warmth, and whether a flat pan is centered over the selected zone. The troubleshooting table also points to the correct control and household fuse or breaker. If the oven alone seems wrong, check its knob, rack and cookware separately. These lamps report operating conditions; the JAS640 pages do not assign them a numerical failed-part code.
