MODEL OVERVIEW
About this model: GE JDS26BWAD
GE JDS26BWAD is an almond 30-inch drop-in electric range with four removable plug-in coils, a lift-up porcelain top, two-rack Standard Clean oven and documented generic F function error.
Plug-in coils and a lift-up porcelain deck
The almond JDS26BWAD is a thirty-inch GE drop-in electric range with controls at the front. Its overhanging porcelain-enamel top lifts for access below, unlike a sealed smooth glass surface. Four removable plug-in coils provide heat: two six-inch and two eight-inch elements. Each sits over a one-piece chrome drip bowl. For a small saucepan, select the smaller ring; a larger flat vessel belongs on an eight-inch coil. The linked JDS26 diagram identifies the surface unit ON light, which illuminates whenever any of the coils is set to provide heat. It is an operating indicator, not a fault message. The manual allows an infinite range of heat settings on the knobs and says light clicks can accompany regulation. On a coil range, boilovers can reach the bowls and the space under the lift-up top. This physical layout is why cleaning directions for smooth ceramic glass from other GE ranges do not describe this unit. Keep the model number and the four actual coil positions together when searching for replacement bowls or elements.
The SmartSet oven is Standard Clean
Behind the oven window are two cooking racks. GE calls this oven Standard Clean, so there is no supported high-temperature Self-Clean cycle to start. The upfront SmartSet electronic control still has substantial timed features: a temperature display, electronic clock and kitchen timer, audible preheat indication, Celsius-or-Fahrenheit selection and delayed baking with Cook & Hold. A cook can set a cooking time and a later start, but the clock must show the correct time first. The manual notes that its separate kitchen timer does not itself control oven operation. It can count down while a meal cooks without automatically switching off the element. BAKE and BROIL HI/LO appear on the illustrated JDS26 control diagram, along with START and CLEAR/OFF. The guide also discusses a low-temperature holding zone in the oven; it warns against leaving cooked food there too long. Do not infer from Cook & Hold that cold, perishable food may safely sit through a long delay before heat begins.
Care under the top and around the control
JDS26's coil system needs its own care sequence. After switching every control OFF and allowing the elements to cool, the owner guide shows how a coil lifts only slightly before unplugging. Lifting it excessively can bend its receptacle and prevent it sitting flat later. Remove and hand-clean the drip bowls, or use the guide's dishwasher option for the bowls themselves. The electric coil must not be immersed or put in a dishwasher, and the receptacle is not an owner repair point. The entire porcelain top can be raised on a support rod to remove accumulated grease beneath, then lowered carefully to protect fingers. An oily cavity, dirty bowl or active coil is a different issue from an electronic F message. The manual's problem solver also separates an unseated surface element, a tripped house breaker and a flashing clock after a power outage. For a clock flash, reset the time before assuming the oven board has failed.
Follow JDS26’s longer F reset
The exact JDS26 manual's page thirty-one calls F followed by a number or letter a function error, without listing what each suffix means. It orders CLEAR/OFF, an hour for the oven to cool and another attempt at operation. If the message repeats, it directs the owner to disconnect all power to the oven for five minutes, restore it and call service if the failure remains. Five minutes matters here; it differs from the thirty-second reset found in several other GE manuals. The JDS26 control section gives the same generic F pattern, while the troubleshooting page supplies that longer power step. Record all displayed characters and whether the oven was baking, broiling or idle before the message. The separate SF display belongs to special control settings and a flashing time after outage calls for clock resetting. Neither is a decoded F suffix. Avoid assigning a sensor, coil or control board to the F solely from its ending; the source does not establish that diagnosis.
