MODEL OVERVIEW

About this model: GE JDS28DNWW

The white JDS28DNWW is a 30-inch drop-in GE electric range with four removable plug-in coils, a lift-up porcelain cooktop, a Standard Clean oven and a documented F function-error display.

Identify the exact white drop-in

JDS28DNWW is GE's 30-inch drop-in electric range in a White on White finish. The owner's PDF names the JDS28 on its cover alongside free-standing and slide-in models, but the exact product specification is needed to separate its equipment from that broader family. This range has four removable plug-in coils, not a glass radiant top. The left-front and right-rear coils are six inches; the left-rear and right-front coils are eight inches. Upfront SmartSet touchpads operate the oven, while knobs set the surface heat. The four positions matter if you are identifying a replacement coil or matching a flat-bottomed pan to the heated area. Its installation also matters: the manual illustrates a drop-in anti-tip bracket on the back that must slide beneath the countertop or a wood block attached to the rear wall. The leveling-leg procedure shown for the other two body styles is not the check for this model. When the range is moved for service, confirm the drop-in bracket engages again before use.

Check plug-in coils and chrome bowls

The white porcelain-enamel cooktop can be lifted for cleaning, and each coil rests above a removable chrome drip bowl. The guide says a surface ON lamp glows whenever any surface unit is operating; turn each knob to OFF after cooking instead of interpreting a dark coil as a switched-off control. For a coil that does not heat properly, the troubleshooting page asks whether the element is fully seated in its receptacle, whether the correct control is selected and whether the bowl sits correctly. Make these checks only when the control is off and the assembly is cool. During cleaning, lift a coil about one inch before pulling it out; repeated higher lifting can damage its receptacle. The coil itself must not be immersed or put in a dishwasher. The separate drip bowls may be washed by hand or in a dishwasher, but foil must not line them because trapped heat may damage wiring. The lift-up surface gives access to spills underneath; lower its supports carefully to avoid pinched fingers.

Use and clean the traditional oven

This exact oven is listed as Standard Clean. The shared PDF also explains Self Clean for some other ranges, so its high-temperature cleaning procedure does not establish that JDS28DNWW has that feature. Manual cleaning of the cavity uses mild soap with water or a vinegar-water solution, followed by a clean-water rinse and soft cloth after surfaces cool. GE lists two oven racks, six-pass bake and broil elements, one interior light and a white frameless glass door that lifts off for maintenance. Set rack positions before heating, and keep foil, baking stones and cookware off the oven floor: the manual warns they can trap heat or melt. The oven control has an electronic clock and timer. Its Cook Time function works with Bake and switches the oven off at the programmed end, which differs from a kitchen timer that merely counts down. Press Start to commit a cooking selection. If baking seems uneven, first review rack level, pan size and the recipe before assuming that the electronic control has failed.

Read an F display without guessing parts

An F followed by a number or letter is identified on physical PDF page 23 as a function error. The table does not decode the characters into a specific sensor, heating element or board. Its first instruction is Cancel/Off, followed by one hour of cooling and another attempt to operate the oven. Only if the function code repeats does it direct you to disconnect all oven power for at least thirty seconds, restore power and call service if the error returns. Record the entire display and the cooking mode, rather than looking up a generic F suffix from another GE model. The product lists mis-wire detection, but the cited F entry does not say that every F display means mis-wiring; do not equate those features. A coil connection problem, a dark clock after an outage and an F oven-function message have different checks. The exact model number on the label and the full observed characters help a technician choose the correct control and wiring documents.
