MODEL OVERVIEW

About this model: GE JE1390GA

A model-specific guide to JE1390GA sensor messages, convection cooking and probe-related display states.

Identify the microwave-convection unit

JE1390GA is GE's Profile Performance 1.3-cubic-foot countertop microwave and convection oven, rated at 850 watts of microwave output. Its exact product specifications list sensor controls for Beverage, Cook, Popcorn and Reheat, as well as Combination Cook and Combination Roast. The appliance is 14 7/8 inches high, 22 1/4 inches wide and 19 3/4 inches deep. Those facts identify this oven before applying advice from a different GE sensor-only microwave.

The linked owner's manual calls the family JE1390, then names JE1390GA in the optional black trim-kit entry on page 9. That direct SKU mention supports using its operating instructions for this variant; the kit is an accessory, not evidence that this countertop oven was installed in a wall. The same feature page illustrates a temperature probe, a removable turntable, a tall shelf and a short shelf. GE separately lists a ceramic turntable and SmartRack for this exact model.

Read the exact display text

This manual uses two similar-looking labels for different situations. SENSOR ERROR in the page-31 chart means that a door was opened during a sensor feature before steam could be detected. A separate row headed simply ERROR applies during Reheat or Popcorn. Its causes include an early door opening; for Popcorn, the chart also lists a four-minute-ten-second interval without detected steam. Reading the whole label matters because the causes are not interchangeable.

The Popcorn instructions provide a concrete example of the plain ERROR label: opening the door while POP remains on the display produces ERROR. GE then says to close the door, press CLEAR/OFF and begin again. For the no-steam Popcorn case, its troubleshooting chart instead points to Time Cook. Do not transplant the steam-timeout explanation to SENSOR ERROR on this particular manual; that row only identifies the door opened before detection. Note what program was running before choosing the response.

Follow the sensor sequence

JE1390GA's exact GE record includes a Cook sensor control, and the linked manual describes seven Cook Codes for specific foods. While the sensor is active, AUTO appears rather than a remaining-time count. After steam is sensed, a beep sounds and AUTO changes to cooking time. The manual allows opening the door to stir or rotate once the countdown is visible, followed by closing it and pressing START. Opening it during the earlier sensing phase changes the situation.

The Popcorn preset has a narrower package range than a generic popcorn button: the manual specifies 3.0 to 3.5 ounces and directs Time Cook outside it. Reheat is intended for one 4-to-8-ounce serving or a plate of leftovers; it signals at steam detection and then counts down. GE recommends Time Cook if the reheated food needs more time. These program limits explain why the display sequence and selected food are useful details when troubleshooting an interrupted sensor run.

Keep cooking modes and shelves separate

The convection side makes this page materially different from a microwave-only sensor guide. GE describes a heating element and circulating fan, with selectable oven temperatures from 225°F to 450°F. The short shelf supports air circulation; the tall shelf can be added for two-level baking. A preheated convection program signals when ready, and the manual says it shuts off if the door is not opened within one hour. None of those hot-air steps describes the steam-sensing phase of Cook or Reheat.

Combination cooking brings microwave energy and circulating hot air together. The exact product page lists separate Combination Cook and Combination Roast controls; the manual instructs using only the short shelf for combination cooking, never the tall shelf. It also rules out metal cookware in that mode. The page-9 probe and shelf diagram identifies the hardware, but placement depends on the selected mode. Checking the mode before inserting a shelf avoids treating a combination restriction as a sensor fault.

Interpret heat and probe messages

Heat produces another message that is easy to misread as a broken sensor. Page 31 says HOT can appear if the oven interior exceeds 200°F and the door is opened. Page 32 separately calls HOT--OVEN IS HOT a normal indication at that temperature and explains that sensor cooking pads will not operate while the oven is hot. Letting the interior cool addresses that condition; repeatedly restarting a steam-sensor program does not change the temperature limit described by GE.

The temperature probe has its own diagnostic path. Page 32 links BAD PROBE to a probe that is not fully seated or is defective, while LOCKED means the control lock is engaged and can be released by holding CLEAR/OFF for about three seconds. These messages should not be folded into SENSOR ERROR. On JE1390GA, first record the exact display wording, the chosen cooking mode and whether the cavity was recently heated by convection or combination cooking. The manual then points to the relevant row rather than one universal reset.
