MODEL OVERVIEW
About this model: GE JE1640WB
JE1640WB pairs nine Cook, six Reheat and six Snacks programs with an L child-lock status, REM reminder and TURn defrost prompt.
Exact JE1640WB controls
JE1640WB is the white, 1.6-cubic-foot GE countertop microwave rated at 1,100 watts, with a large 15.5625-inch turntable. The exact product sheet identifies this finish and separately lists Child Lock, nine Cook codes, six Reheat codes and six Snacks codes. That SKU check matters: the linked owner's booklet says JE1640 on its cover and warns that illustrated features and appearance can vary. The white JE1640WB product listing supplies the missing confirmation for the controls discussed here. On page fourteen, the oven drawing locates the touch panel, latch release and removable glass platter. The platter and its support belong in place during use, although both can be removed for cleaning. Page fifteen divides the panel into timed controls and convenience programs; these are different ways of entering a cycle, so an apparently unresponsive key can simply be awaiting a food type, weight or Start. Check the complete model on the nameplate before applying this menu map to another JE-series oven.
L, REM and TURn on the display
The most useful display distinction is a single letter. Page twenty-eight calls the control feature Child Lock-Out and says holding CLEAR/OFF for about three seconds locks or unlocks the panel; an L remains on the display while locked. L is an intentional status, not a fault code or a failed keypad. The same page uses REM for a scheduled Reminder, which acts as an alarm without turning on microwave energy. REM stays visible until its time arrives and the door is opened or CLEAR/OFF is pressed. Auto Defrost has a different prompt, TURn: page twenty-six says the oven signals it twice so the food can be turned and thawed parts can be separated or shielded. That prompt is part of the programmed defrost sequence, not an electrical error. The exact listing confirms Child Lock and Auto & Time Defrost, supporting those two instructions for JE1640WB. If the panel lights but cooking does not start, page thirty-three instead asks the owner to check the closed door, Start key, entered time or weight, and any previous selection that needs clearing.
Choose the correct numbered food menu
This model's three numbered food menus should not be treated as interchangeable. Reheat offers six categories, from pasta and meats or pizza to fruit, beverages, sauces and a plate of leftovers. The table on page twenty-four asks for covered food in several categories and a wide-mouth mug for an eight-to-ten-ounce beverage. Snacks has its own six categories, including breads, sandwiches, leftover pizza slices, dessert toppings, soup and cheese dip; after choosing a number, enter the item count or weight in ounces. Cook uses nine food types and asks for ounce weight. Page twenty-five gives different preparation rules: canned and frozen vegetables use a covered microwave-safe bowl, fresh vegetables add water, and potatoes need pierced skins before going on the turntable. Fish, chicken pieces, ground meat, bacon and frozen microwave pizza complete the list. Record the chosen menu number and weight if results differ from expectation; entering a Reheat number where Cook expects a weight changes the program rather than exposing a fault.
Timed cooking and care
For a cycle whose time you choose yourself, Time Cook I starts at full power unless another of ten levels is entered. Time Cook II lets a second period follow automatically at a different level. Unlike some other GE manuals, page sixteen of this JE1640 guide explicitly permits changing power while the countdown is running. Express Cook keys one through six start that many minutes immediately at full power; Add 30 Seconds starts a short cycle or extends one already counting. Popcorn is calibrated for 1.75, 3.0 and 3.5-ounce bags, and page twenty-three gives a twenty-second shorter or longer adjustment with the 1 or 9 key after starting. Beverage selects four, eight or twelve ounces, so remove a heated drink carefully. Auto Defrost serves meat, poultry and fish up to six pounds; Time Defrost is offered for other foods. The separate Kitchen Timer can count without microwave energy, delay a cook, or create a holding interval between defrost and cooking. Unplug before cleaning and keep the platter support seated during use.
