MODEL OVERVIEW
About this model: GE JGB860SEJSS
GE JGB860SEJSS combines a traditional upper oven with a lower convection oven, an 18,000-BTU left-front burner and a 10,000-BTU center griddle burner. Its shared display may report F plus a character.
Map the asymmetric burner layout
JGB860SEJSS is the GE 30-inch free-standing gas double-oven range with a stainless-steel and gray appearance. Its advertised 6.80 cubic feet is a combination, not the size of either single cavity: the upper oven holds 2.5 cubic feet and the lower holds 4.3. The cooking top is asymmetric in a useful way. The 18,000-BTU Power Boil burner sits at left front, while the right-front burner is 9,500 BTU. Behind them, left rear is a 5,000-BTU Precise Simmer and right rear is 12,000 BTU. In the middle, a 10,000-BTU oval burner supports the included integrated non-stick griddle. GE specifies sealed burners, an edge-to-edge grate arrangement and heavy cast iron. These numbers and positions matter when checking whether a replacement grate or burner assembly belongs to SEJSS, since a similar looking double-oven range may put its strongest flame on the opposite side. The owner's guide calls some griddles optional because it spans variants; GE's exact product listing confirms this model's included one.
Use two different oven technologies
The two oven chambers have different cooking technology. GE calls the smaller upper oven Traditional and the larger lower oven Convection, with dedicated Convection Bake and Convection Roast modes. The manual is explicit that Broil belongs to the upper cavity, while both convection modes belong to the lower one. Convection Bake uses moving air to help when baking across several racks; the guide says to preheat for that mode. Convection Roast combines lower burner heat with circulating air and asks the cook to check food early because time may shorten. An upper-oven recipe should not be entered through the lower convection controls just because both cavities share one electronic-touch front panel. The exact model has three racks in total, and its product data gives two upper and five lower positions. The special-feature menu even separates upper and lower oven temperature offsets, which helps explain why service questions should specify the selected chamber. Keep the exhaust openings clear, and leave space around multiple pans for air flow rather than packing the lower cavity wall to wall.
Choose steam or self-clean by soil level
GE lists Self Clean with a Steam Clean option for both cavities. The two methods are not interchangeable in soil level. Steam Clean is a shorter, lower-temperature treatment for light residue: the guide starts from a room-temperature oven, asks the owner to wipe excess grease, add a cup of water to the bottom, close the door, and wipe loosened soil after the 30-minute cycle. Self Clean uses very high heat for heavier buildup, requires removal of items other than approved black self-clean racks and grates, and keeps the door locked until cooling is sufficient. A silver nickel-plated rack may tarnish if left inside. Before either cleaning method, identify which cavity and which Clean selection is active; do not assume the control is cleaning both ovens at once. On the cooktop, the non-stick center griddle should be placed and removed only while cool and with all surface burners off. Grease accumulated beneath that plate creates a separate fire hazard.
Capture the full F event before service
If the display flashes F followed by a number or a letter, the rendered troubleshooting table on physical PDF page 31 calls it a function error. It does not translate a particular suffix into a failed board, sensor, or burner, nor does it name an upper or lower origin. First press Cancel/Off and allow the oven to cool for an hour, then retry the selected operation. If the code repeats, disconnect all power to the range for at least thirty seconds, restore it, and arrange service if F returns again. Note whether the upper broiler, lower convection bake, lower convection roast, or a cleaning mode was running, along with all characters and the point in the cycle. Other display messages have different causes: LOCK DOOR during cleaning can reflect an open door, and LOC ON can indicate control lockout. A clock flashing after an outage calls for clock reset. Reporting the entire SEJSS model and the selected chamber gives a technician much more useful evidence than reporting only a lone F.
Verified model details
Lower convection belongs to this exact SKU; the upper oven supplies the broiler.
