MODEL OVERVIEW

About this model: GE JT980CHCC

JT980CHCC is a bisque GE Profile double wall oven with upper Trivection speed modes, selectable convection, two noninterchangeable rack sets and a documented lower-display F fault pattern.

Identify the two Trivection-era cavities

JT980CHCC is the GE Profile built-in double wall oven whose linked cover names JT980 as a 30-inch two-cavity model. GE lists 4.3 cubic feet for each cavity and bisque glass doors, but the same volume does not make the two chambers operationally identical. Speed Bake and Speed Broil are explicitly upper-oven modes in the exact product record. Both ovens have three heavy-duty racks, yet the manual warns that the rack designs differ and cannot be swapped; the upper Trivection cavity uses five positions and the lower uses seven. The model and serial label is behind an oven door on the side trim or lower front area, so record the complete CHCC identity before seeking a rack or control. This appliance has no surface cooktop. Its central Chef's Guide screen serves the two wall-oven sections and can display operating prompts as well as faults. Identify the affected door and chosen oven on that screen before interpreting a heat, timing or display complaint.

Use speed modes only in the upper oven

The upper Trivection oven combines microwave assistance with a convection fan and conventional heating elements for speed cooking. It still offers conventional modes; Speed Bake and Speed Broil are additional upper-only choices, not default behavior of the lower cavity. The guide asks for a food category, recipe temperature and maximum ordinary cook time, then converts the time for its accelerated program. Preheat first, wait for PUT FOOD IN OVEN, place the dish and select START once more so the countdown begins. Opening the upper door pauses microwave energy and the timer; closing it allows the process to continue. The Recipes memory is likewise labeled upper-only on double models. Convection is broader: the guide describes selecting the upper or lower oven for CONV MULTI, CONV 1-RACK or CONVROAST. Do not confuse that selectable fan mode with microwave-assisted speed cooking. If a dish needs an extra interval, use the display's prompt and check doneness rather than relying solely on a shortened calculated time.

Navigate shared controls and cleaning

Chef's Guide glass-touch controls present menu choices and a numeric keypad, and a deliberate control lock covers both ovens. CONTROL IS LOCKED means the pads have been disabled by this setting; it does not name a failed heater. The owner guide also describes display sleep after inactivity, which can blank the menu until a key wakes it without launching that key's function. Both cavities are self-cleaning in the operating guide, with an automatic hot-door lock. They may each be scheduled, but the second cleaning cycle waits for the first to finish. Before either cycle remove broiler cookware, foil and heavy soil; do not force an oven door that has not cooled below the locking threshold. A cooling fan can continue after cooking. These details help explain why one oven can be waiting, a panel can be locked, or a screen can look blank without any F error. Determine which oven was selected and whether a pending clean delay exists before treating inactivity as a control failure.

Trace lower-display F and other messages

On page 9 the electronic control calls F followed by a number or letter a function error. The later troubleshooting table on physical page 43 specifically describes F flashing in the lower oven display. For that row, CLEAR/OFF is followed by one hour of cooling and another attempt. If F returns, disconnect the double oven for at least thirty seconds and call for service if it repeats after power is restored. Write down every character and explicitly note lower or upper display; the guide does not identify a faulty component from the suffix. A distinct Miswired detected message on page 41 points to incorrect house wiring and an installer or qualified electrician, not repeated F resets. A flashing clock after outage calls for restoring time and interrupted settings. If rack placement prevents a double-oven door closing properly, confirm that upper and lower racks have not been interchanged. Give service the message, oven location and active speed, convection or cleaning mode rather than a guessed part name.
