MODEL OVERVIEW
About this model: GE JVM1660BH
GE JVM1660BH is a black-on-black, 1.6-cu-ft, 1000-watt over-range microwave with a 13.5-inch turntable, Instant-On sensor menus and two-speed venting. The manual explains SENSOR ERROR in its Popcorn and troubleshooting sections.
A larger black over-range JVM
The exact JVM1660BH is black on black, with 1.6 cubic feet inside and 1000 watts of microwave output. Its 13.5-inch glass turntable is larger than the plate on some earlier Spacemaker units, a practical consideration for dish width. GE specifies external venting with a two-speed fan and cooktop lighting choices of bright, night and off. This positions the microwave above a range as both cooking cavity and local hood. The product also lists five scrolling-display speeds and four sound-volume levels, making the panel more configurable than a simple fixed-display unit. The family feature page says its clock and calendar should be set before use. A dark or unresponsive screen may therefore be about settings or power rather than a failed humidity sensor. Express Cook can start a one-to-six-minute operation immediately, while ten power levels allow a deliberate timed program. An external vent feature is not an oven-cooling fan, and the cooktop lamp does not change food sensing.
Several immediate programs, but different accessories
Instant-On controls on this model include Popcorn, Beverage, potato, Reheat, meats, fish, chicken and three vegetable codes. They are not identical to Auto Roast, which uses a food probe inserted into its wall outlet. Page twenty-one explains that the turntable stops during probe use; that pause is normal and should not trigger a motor diagnosis. GE's exact product lists two wire racks and two possible positions, yet the family guide limits shelf use to reheating on more than one level. For a single dish, the turntable is the usual support. The rack should be removed for sensor cooking, Reheat and Popcorn. This protects both program behavior and the interior from arcing if a shelf is misplaced. Select an automatic food category only when the portion matches its intended range; for ordinary food, Time Cook and a chosen power level give more direct control. The five scroll speeds change how help text is presented, not how quickly the magnetron cooks.
The sensor cycle has a beginning and end
Popcorn has a specific sensing phase in the JVM1660 guide. If the door is opened while POPCORN is still displayed, SENSOR ERROR appears; the printed response is to close it, use Clear/Off and start again. On the service page the same wording can mean that steam did not appear before the maximum sensing time. A sensor must receive vapor from the food before it can choose the remaining cook time. Those two causes are operational and do not establish a broken part. The same Popcorn page warns against using the feature twice in succession on one food portion because severely overcooked or burnt food may result. If the first pass leaves food underdone after countdown, GE recommends Time Cook for additional time. The two-level shelf is specifically barred with sensor cooking and Reheat. Record whether the door opened, what food was being heated and when the countdown began before interpreting the message. Avoid simply pressing the same preset again without checking the food.
Probe and lock states have other remedies
Other words on the panel refer to a different measurement path. PLEASE INSERT PROBE means a probe is absent or poorly seated for temperature cooking. BAD PROBE can also follow a poor wall-outlet connection; the table then mentions replacing a genuinely defective probe. Ensure the tip is in the center of thawed food and the connector fully inserted, while remembering that a still turntable is expected with this accessory. LOCKED refers to the child control state and the guide says to hold Clear/Off for roughly three seconds to release it. None of these labels is another spelling of SENSOR ERROR. In a general no-start situation the JVM1660 table additionally lists a door that is not securely closed. Check that mechanical condition before assuming a failed magnetron. Provide the exact message, program and accessory to service if the correct setup repeatedly fails. This source supports distinct program and probe messages, not a numerical hardware fault diagnosis.
