MODEL OVERVIEW
About this model: GE PGS960YPFS
PGS960YPFS double-gas-oven range with upper/lower controls and documented F function error.
Separate the two oven cavities
PGS960YPFS is a front-control Profile gas range whose two ovens have separate jobs. GE lists 6.7 cubic feet in total, divided into a 2.4-cubic-foot upper cavity and a 4.3-cubic-foot lower cavity. The upper uses traditional heat; the lower is the true-convection oven. Select Upper Oven or Lower Oven on the electronic touch panel before choosing a mode, a time or a cleaning program. An unexpected response can be a selection issue rather than a failed heating system. The upper has one self-clean rack and the lower two. At thirty inches wide, this is a full-size slide-in range; its size and vent needs must be checked on its own installation documents. The linked owner booklet calls out PGS960 on its cover, so the dual-cavity instructions are more specifically grounded than those in a generic gas-range pamphlet.
Fit each burner to its cookware
Five gas burners serve different cookware. The left-front tri-ring is rated 21,000 BTU, the right-front 15,000, and the center is a 9,500-BTU dual oval for the included reversible grill/griddle. The 5,000-BTU left-rear Precise Simmer burner suits a smaller pan and sustained low heat. Match flame size to the pan bottom; the manual says extending flame beyond it adds risk without speeding heating. Use the reversible cast-iron accessory only over the center position, first replacing its grate as directed. Its ribbed face is for foods normally grilled, while the flatter face handles pancake-style cooking. Keep it out of the dishwasher and let all burner parts cool before cleaning. The dual-oval caps are fixed to their heads, so do not pry them away while washing the removable round caps.
Use lower-only cooking functions accurately
The lower cavity supports convection baking and a lower-only Convection Roast path, while GE's exact listing also names Proof in the lower oven and Warming in both cavities. A probe is specified for this model, and the guide expressly limits its socket and program to the lower oven. Insert the tip in the thickest central part of suitable food, away from bone or fat, then verify doneness in more than one place with a food thermometer. Proof is intended to raise dough and cannot keep food at a safe serving temperature. The family panel draws an Air Fry key marked lower-only, but the exact PGS960YPFS cooking-mode fields do not list Air Fry; this page therefore does not promise it as an available retail feature. Cook Time turns the selected oven off at the end, whereas the independent kitchen timer only signals. Note which oven and control actually changed before diagnosing a cooking interruption.
Read F, LOCK DOOR and LOC ON separately
The display gives different messages for different conditions. An F followed by a number or letter is identified in the PGS960 troubleshooting table as a function error. Record the complete display, press Cancel/Off, allow about one hour of cooling and try the oven again. If the code repeats, the guide calls for disconnecting all oven power for at least thirty seconds, reconnecting, and arranging service if it returns. A flashing LOCK DOOR during self-clean instead says the selected cavity door is open; close it. A lit LOCKED state can remain while the oven is above its unlocking temperature, so allow cooling after a cleaning cycle. LOC ON describes the separate touch-panel lock: hold the zero key for three seconds to release it. None of these labels alone tells you which component has failed.
Clean the selected cavity and report service details
GE specifies Self-Clean with a Steam Clean option for this exact range. Choose the upper or lower oven first, start Steam Clean at room temperature with one cup of water on that cavity's floor, and leave the door shut for thirty minutes. Self-Clean is a hotter, longer operation, and the manual distinguishes which black racks can remain inside. Remove heavy soil beforehand and follow the bird-ventilation warning in the guide. The upper and lower cavities may not respond to the same key press if the wrong one is selected. Wi-Fi is built in, but an app or router outage is a different fault path from a local F display. If power fails, the manual says not to run the oven; surface burners have separate cautious guidance. For support, provide PGS960YPFS, which cavity was selected, the complete screen message and whether the problem arose while cooking or cleaning.
