MODEL OVERVIEW
About this model: GE PVM2170SRSS
GE PVM2170SRSS is a 2.1-cu-ft stainless over-range microwave with dial navigation, Power Saver, CONTROL LOCKED, YOUR FOOD IS READY and a documented SENSOR ERROR message.
Identify the PVM2170 controls before using a recipe
PVM2170SRSS belongs to GE's stainless Profile Spacemaker over-range line, but its control method is more specific than that label suggests. The exact product listing gives a 2.10-cubic-foot cavity and 1,000-watt microwave output. Its linked owner PDF names PVM2170 on the cover, and the illustrated control page shows a central dial marked turn to select and press to enter. The panel surrounds it with Cooking Menu, Defrost, Steam, Family Snacks and MyPlate choices. MyPlate's food group path includes grains and seafood, and the guide explains how the dial selects a food type. That arrangement is useful when comparing instructions: a sequence written for a flat numeric keypad or the older touch Home interface will not correspond to this menu. Begin with the actual button name, then turn and press the dial at the prompt. Steam Cook is a named program on this exact product; it is not a separate steam-generator mode and still requires the manual's microwave-safe food preparation and sensor rules.
Separate Power Saver from the control lock
A dark PVM2170 display needs context before it is treated as a dead appliance. GE lists Power Saver for the exact SRSS unit, even though the family manual labels its description as applying to some models. Activating the button deliberately turns off the ordinary display and clock to reduce standby use. Deactivating it may restore the remembered time or ask for the time again. The guide also says food placed inside while Power Saver was active may lead to a repeated insertion request; opening and closing the door clears that prompt. The troubleshooting table lists an unengaged Power Saver button among no-start causes. Control Lock-Out is different: hold CANCEL/OFF for about three seconds to toggle it, and a later button or dial input briefly displays CONTROL LOCKED. The exact product page confirms Child Lock. Record whether the screen is dark, whether the lock phrase appears after an input, and whether Power Saver is pressed. Those observations point to different owner settings, not the same failure.
Read each displayed message in its own context
PVM2170 has three documented phrases that should not be collapsed into a generic error-code list. YOUR FOOD IS READY is the Cooking Complete Reminder: after cooking, the oven beeps once a minute until the door is opened or CANCEL/OFF is pressed. CONTROL LOCKED is a deliberate lock status, released by the three-second hold. SENSOR ERROR is different. In the troubleshooting table GE says a sensor program may show it when the door was opened before steam could be detected, or when steam was not detected within the maximum allowed time. For a fresh sensor attempt, keep the door closed until the display starts a countdown. If the food remains undercooked after the first sensor run, the manual directs using Time Cook for further heating, not another immediate sensor pass on the same portion. The phrase alone does not prove an electronic sensor component is broken. Note the selected program, food, door opening and whether steam appeared before seeking service.
Check cooking, turntable and hood settings separately
Several other controls can change what an owner sees without changing the meaning of SENSOR ERROR. The turntable can be switched off through Settings for large dishes; GE's exact specification confirms that option, but the removable plate and support must still be seated for microwave operation. The four-speed hood fan includes Boost and may start itself to protect the microwave from heat rising off the cooktop. The programmable night light is a separate lighting schedule, and sound volume has four user levels. A lit lamp, running fan or minute timer is therefore not proof that the microwave cooking program is active. If cooking does not begin after making a selection, the troubleshooting table directs checking the closed door, START/PAUSE and Power Saver state. Give support the exact display phrase, selected mode and whether the dial accepted the choice. That model-specific sequence is more informative than assigning an invented numerical code to this oven.

Power Saver can darken the display and hide the clock without a supply fault.
