MODEL OVERVIEW

About this model: LG WM3400CW

The WM3400CW is LG's white 4.

Identify the white WM3400CW and its display

The WM3400CW is LG's white 4.5-cubic-foot front-load washer, not a graphite variant or an LCD-dial model. Its exact specification lists eight programs and a maximum spin speed of 1300 RPM. The cabinet measures 27 inches wide, 39 inches high and 30 1/4 inches deep, so record the full model before using a guide for a different machine. On this washer the owner's manual depicts a cycle selector knob, separate Start/Pause button, modifier keys and a compact time display. Two dashes on that display can be an ordinary load-sensing interval before the remaining time appears. That temporary display state should not be confused with a two-character failure code.

Select a wash program before judging a symptom

Eight named programs give WM3400CW owners a useful starting point: Normal, Perm. Press, Heavy Duty, Delicates, Towels, Speed Wash, Bedding and Tub Clean. Choose the program for the fabric rather than interpreting a short or long run time as proof of a defect. LG identifies ColdWash as an option, and the manual explains that the high-efficiency design can use less visible water than an older washer. The four-compartment drawer has separate places for prewash, main detergent, bleach and softener; putting an additive in the wrong compartment can change the result without producing an error code. Delay Wash advances one hour per press up to nineteen hours, so check whether a scheduled start explains a machine that has not begun washing.

Trace IE and OE along different water paths

IE concerns water entering the WM3400CW. The manual first points to supply faucets, then to pinched or kinked inlet hoses, clogged inlet screens and insufficient household pressure. Its maintenance section specifically says a dirty inlet filter or low pressure can make IE blink. OE means the washer cannot empty as expected: inspect the drain hose for a pinch, bend or obstruction and check that its end is not installed too high. LG separately notes that debris in the drain-pump filter can blink OE. These codes name different sides of the plumbing, so cleaning the pump filter will not address a closed supply faucet. If water remains in the drum, follow the manual's draining precautions before opening that filter.

Separate load and door problems from component faults

UE describes an unbalanced load; a very small load or heavy articles tangled with lighter garments can prevent a stable spin. Redistribute the laundry or add suitable items before assuming the motor failed. The dE family points to an unsecured door, so close it firmly and inspect the sealing area for trapped fabric. Other codes have a different urgency: FE indicates excessive water from a faulty valve, while PE concerns the water-level sensor. For either of those, LG says to close the faucets, unplug the washer and seek service. The manual gives a timed restart for tE and LE but directs service if they persist; its vs vibration-sensor fault goes straight to service. Record the actual letters before troubleshooting.

Recognize maintenance and control notices

A blinking tcL on this model is a reminder to run Tub Clean, and LG explicitly states that it is not an error code. CL indicates that Control Lock is active; it prevents changes to cycles until the lock is turned off. Neither message means the inlet valve or drain pump has failed. For a real IE after confirming the faucets, the owner maintenance instructions explain how sediment can clog the inlet screens. For OE, the drain-pump filter is a separate service point and residual water must be drained carefully first. Use the displayed characters together with the current wash stage and the owner's table; a normal lock or cleaning reminder calls for a different action than a repeated sensor or overflow fault.
