MODEL OVERVIEW
About this model: LG WM6500HWA
LG WM6500HWA is a white 5.0-cu-ft front loader with a digital LCD that displays actual door, water and component fault messages.
Identify the white LCD-dial washer
The LG WM6500HWA is the white 5.0-cubic-foot front-loading washer in the WM6500 family. LG's specification gives this finish its own UPC, 195174048689, and lists the DLEX6500W electric dryer as a matching appliance. It is 27 inches wide and 39 inches high, with a 33⅛-inch closed depth. Its front door needs 57¾ inches of depth when open, so check the space opposite the machine before ordering a pedestal or placing it in a narrow laundry room. The electrical requirement is 120 volts and 10 amps.
This model's round digital dial contains an LCD that shows selections and status messages, with separate touch controls for temperature, spin, soil and options. LG's exact WM6500HWA support entry links the owner PDF whose cover explicitly includes WM6500H*A. The white SKU specification confirms an LCD, steam option, drum light and 25 programs. The panel drawing on page 23 matches those controls. These pieces establish that the plain-language messages on pages 46–47 belong to this washer. Use the displayed words when looking up a remedy.
Choose programs with the display
The 25-program specification includes Normal, AI Wash, Bedding, Delicates, Towels, Quick Wash, Allergiene, Sanitary and several garment-specific choices. Only some appear in the initial dial list; the manual explains that Cycle List Edit adds or removes non-default programs and that Normal and Tub Clean cannot be deleted. AI Wash changes wash and rinse patterns after detecting load size, while Bedding makes room for bulky articles that should not be mixed with small garments. Quick Wash is described for two or three lightly soiled pieces under three pounds. Match the cycle to fabric and load before blaming a changed duration on the control board.
The exact sheet also lists TurboWash 360, AI fabric sensing, a four-tray dispenser and a 1,300-rpm maximum spin. These features do not mean every option works in every program. The manual says Steam and Cold Wash cannot be selected together, and No Spin is unavailable when TurboWash is on. Allergiene automatically includes steam and is unsuitable for wool, silk or other temperature-sensitive items. Fresh Care turns the drum periodically for up to 19 hours after a wash when clothes cannot be removed promptly. A resumed tumbling sound then belongs to a selected care option, not necessarily to a failed motor.
Separate filling, draining and door messages
On this LCD, “Water supply” means investigate the inlet side. Open both faucets completely, look for pinched hoses and clean the inlet screens if they are blocked. Page 47 adds low household pressure and leak-limiting hoses as possible causes. A “Drainage” message instead directs attention to the outlet hose: straighten a kink, remove a clog and check its height. LG says its end must be below 96 inches above the washer bottom, preferably no higher than 66 inches. These two displayed phrases point to different plumbing paths; copying an IE or OE abbreviation from another model would hide that distinction.
“Door open” asks for the door to be closed again, whereas “Door unlocked” calls for checking objects around the gasket and door. If either persists after the stated check, the manual says to unplug the washer and request service. The ordinary door-lock lamp on page 24 simply shows that a wash has secured the door. Control Lock is another normal state: it disables most controls, but LG expressly says it does not lock the physical door. A button that beeps without changing settings can therefore be a selected lock function, while a persistent door message deserves its own inspection.
Treat sensor and motor messages by cause
“No water detected” is not the same as an empty supply line. Page 47 attributes it to the water-level sensor and directs owners to close the faucets, unplug the machine and call for service. “Water too high” points to a faulty water valve and carries the same stop-and-service direction. “Motor error” allows a different first step: let the washer stand for 30 minutes, restart the cycle, and seek service if the message returns. “No temp detected” is a control error for which LG specifies disconnecting power for 60 minutes before retrying. Record the exact words because the recommended waits and water shutoffs differ.
The same table lists “Vibration sensor” as a sensor malfunction and “Steam error” as a failed steam function; both call for service. “Freeze error” points to a frozen inlet hose, drain hose or pump and refers to the manual's cold-climate procedure. An “Unbalance” message can often be approached at the load: add pieces to a very small load or untangle heavy articles from light ones. “Oversudsing” calls for less detergent, not a new pump. The display's plain words and the manual's cause column help separate user-correctable conditions from electrical or component faults.
Keep water paths clean and report evidence
Maintenance matters because several alerts concern water movement. After a wash, wipe moisture from the door and gasket and leave the drum open to dry. LG recommends an empty Tub Clean cycle monthly; the matching ThinQ feature can report how many cycles remain before cleaning. The dispenser drawer can collect detergent residue and should be cleaned once or twice a month. The inlet screens require care when filling slows: turn off both faucets, remove the hoses, clean and reinstall the screens, then flush the hoses before reconnecting. The manual warns against operating without those inlet filters.
The WM6500HWA specification confirms Smart Diagnosis and Wi-Fi, while the owner manual describes both app-based and audible diagnostic methods. For an audible report, use the dial to choose Smart Diagnosis in Additional Settings, hold the phone by Power and let the tones finish. This can provide service context; it does not replace the immediate faucet and power precautions printed for high water or a failed level sensor. Before contacting service, note the complete LCD phrase, the selected cycle, whether the door-lock indicator was lit, and which inlet or drain checks have already been performed.
