MODEL OVERVIEW

About this model: Panasonic NN-SN686SAZH

A source-checked guide to the NN-SN686SAZH display, controls, and H00/H97/H98 service messages.

Match this exact product to its owner guide

Panasonic's product guide names NN-SN686SAZH, marks it as a current 2024 release, and describes a 1.2 cubic foot Inverter microwave rated at 1200 watts. Its Manuals and Specifications tab links the owner's PDF used here. The PDF cover shortens the name to NN-SN686S and also lists NN-SN67HS and NN-SN65HS, so the exact support-page link matters more than a guess from the family name alone. The control-layout note says those three family models have the same key layout and function even when button names differ. On this oven the display, number keys, separate sensor programs, Inverter Turbo Defrost, glass tray, roller ring and door release button all have defined places in the manual. Use the label on your appliance and the NN-SN686SAZH support page together when checking a control or a displayed message.

A flashing lock icon has a specific meaning

After power is connected, the first-use sequence lets the user choose weight units and whether key beeps sound. Clock Set makes the colon flash during entry; the manual says the oven will not operate while that colon is flashing. That is a setup state, not one of its H service codes. The ordinary Child Safety Lock is set by pressing Start three times and cancelled with Stop/Reset three times; it prevents electronic operation but does not lock the door. The separate Child Safety Door Lock is activated when cooking starts, and its icon flashes to indicate that the door is held. To open during or after cooking, the guide says to press 0 once, then the physical door-release button. If nobody operates the oven for 30 minutes after cooking, this door lock releases automatically. Treat the two locks separately before assuming that an unresponsive keypad or door means a component has failed.

Read ordinary cooking signals in context

Manual cooking offers power levels P10 through P1; the guide identifies P10 as highest and P3 as its lower defrost setting. A P10 manual program is limited to 30 minutes, while other levels can run to 99 minutes 99 seconds. Up to three manual stages may be programmed, with two beeps between stages and five at the end; automatic sensor, popcorn and turbo-defrost programs cannot be combined into that three-stage sequence. Quick 30 starts at P10 and can set at most five minutes in half-minute increments. Keep Warm can follow a manually entered cook time for up to 30 minutes, but it does not combine with sensor or other automatic functions. For Inverter Turbo Defrost, a brief dEF display and then a weight entry are expected. If two beeps sound midway through a larger item, the manual asks you to turn or rearrange it. None of these labels or beeps is an H fault report.

Sensor timing and moisture are easy to misread

Sensor Reheat and Sensor Cook use steam from the food to decide when to show the remaining cooking time. The guide says two beeps accompany steam detection; only then does the time appear in the display. Opening the door before that point can release steam and make the result inaccurate. It also asks for a dry glass tray, dry container exterior and dry oven interior before sensor use, since stray water turning to steam can mislead the sensor. The More and Less pads adjust the suggested sensor time by 20 percent. Sensor Reheat is specifically ruled out for bread and pastry, raw food, beverages, frozen food and a warm oven cavity. If one of those situations applies, use a documented manual power and time instead of interpreting a changing countdown as a sensor fault. Steam condensed on the cooler door after cooking is described as normal; wipe it dry as the care section directs.

What H00, H97 and H98 actually establish

The NN-SN686S-family owner's troubleshooting table groups H00, H97 and H98 in one row: cooking stops, one of those strings appears, the oven's power supply has failed, and an authorized service center should be contacted. It does not give a different diagnosis or owner repair for each of the three strings. Record the exact display, stop trying to cook and use Panasonic service guidance rather than opening the microwave casing. Before calling a routine display or start problem an H-code fault, the same table asks users to distinguish a partly closed door, a program that was not started, an earlier program still entered or an accidental Stop/Reset press. A wobbling or noisy turntable points to the glass tray and roller ring placement or dirt beneath them. The service-code row is therefore a clear threshold: an actual H00, H97 or H98 with stopped cooking warrants service; ordinary lock, countdown and tray symptoms have their own checks.
